Re: West Ham former chairman Eggert Magnusson calls for London Stadium to be rebuilt... C&P
The stadium has been converted for us but it has not been set up to deal with the segregation that is necessary to deal with visiting football fans. Almost uniquely football, as opposed to other team sports, has this problem with the rivalry of spectators potentially leading to violent confrontations. And our owners failed to put this message across to the stadium landlord. Alongside this is also the fact that fans who have stood for years were not catered for and spread among people who have sat for years or expected to sit throughout a game. It's been an object lesson in how not to do a stadium migration and sorting it out is leaving a nasty taste in fan's mouths.

Gavros

You know that do you? And by stating it will be a different place is that an acknowledgement that its not suitable now?

it'll be a very different place in a few years time. And owned by us.

It's all behind us away but whoever was paying for the stadium needs shooting.

London made the same mistake as pretty much every other olympic commitee down the years & not thought past the games meaning the venues lay idle most of the time.

I know Spurs we in for the ground but I can't imagine Levy accepting it is how we've accepted it, but of course West Ham have it on the cheap and it looks exactly that.

Agreed comma, so are we saying that the "shambles" statement is almost entirely about the events leading up to and the cost of the stadium? Its not about the suitability so much. The two things get lumped together it seems to me?

I think its a very decent option for 2 million a year and with some improvements makes total sense for us to at least try and keep up with the rich clubs. The alternatives were not viable in comparison or would have been far riskier?

It aint perfect and I understand the nostalgia and memories of UP but when posters weigh in to dismiss the new stadium as "shit" it would be useful to understand in what sense or why exactly. :-)

Re: West Ham former chairman Eggert Magnusson calls for London Stadium to be rebuilt... C&P
Sir Alf the fact is that the only way we would have got a proper football stadium is by building it for ourselves. The OS was never going to be without the Athletics legacy thing.

Re: West Ham former chairman Eggert Magnusson calls for London Stadium to be rebuilt... C&P
In the spirit of open-mindedness, could someone explain in a series of bullet points why the stadium is a "shambles" ? This would be in the context of its association with West Ham going forward and relative to other options not its history prior to West Ham getting the tenancy and not in the wider context of the taxpayer.

I see this statement in many posts but not really explained. If referring to the cost to the taxpayer, the lack of foresight by Coe, Jowell and Livingstone, again I get it but in terms of what it offered West Ham as compared to the other options? Is it still a shambles? I hear its totally unsuitable for football but are those design problems insurmountable over the longer term and with things like safe standing? The issue may well simply come down to the distance the upper seats are from the pitch? Its similar to some stadiums abroad but I understand not something we see in England. For 2million a year and an increase in capacity from 35 to potentially 65k is that a decent trade off? I think it is especially when thinking about the debt that would have ensued with the other options and the fact that we would probably not built a stadium for 50,000 or more.

I would like to understand the context and rationale for the "shambles" comment is all :-)

I loved Eggy.

Just because he made mistakes in his tenure (and gets blamed for many many more things that weren't down to him) doesn't mean he is isn't right about this.

I'd rather have him here than who we have at the meoment

Again and again posters keep quoting Man City and their deal are they ignorant of or totally ignoring the differences between the way these stadia come about and the Olympic athletics legacy commitment?

That what was needed (in reality) was not on offer is the exact and only reason the country has this pile of shit dragging it down, and West Ham have become a convenient whipping boy.

EVERY time the issue of O/S costs come up in the media, it should be mandatory to include the names of Coe. Jowell & Livingstone in the article/discussion.

Re: West Ham former chairman Eggert Magnusson calls for London Stadium to be rebuilt... C&P
Also, pointing out it would have been better had it been configured to redevelop as a purpose built football stadium like at Man City is completely redundant - as it was never on offer.

goose - you obviously didn't read the second article where Eggert said the quotes were incorrect, then went on to say he is happy to see the club at this great stadium.

Eggy is right, the desgin needed a long term view rather than whats good for two weeks of athletics

Eggy is bang on, stadium is a shambles.

I see DS just decided to slag off Eggy instead of countering any of the points he made.

What eggy has to say carries little or no weight. Arrived November 2006, sacked from his CE role by September 2007 and gone from the club totally in December 2007.

The stadium COST £750,000,000.

That don't mean it's WORTH £750,000,000. Most of that money's sitting in somebody's sky doing very nicely, thank you very much.

At most it's worth what an insurer would cover it for in the event it became uncomissionable.

Nail one of the bods on here for a figure - I believe we have several posters who work in that sector.

He has now said, below. he is indeed very happy that my beloved old club have use of this great stadium.
